KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) seized 169,250 pieces of counterfeit disposable diapers worth RM73,112 in three raids in Pasir Mas and Tumpat today.
Its director, Datuk Ab Ghani Harun, said the diapers were seized from two business premises in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, and from a warehouse in Wakaf Baru, Tumpat.
"The raids were mounted from 10am yesterday until 4am today following a report from a diaper manufacturer claiming that its products had been imitated and were being sold in Kelantan and also the neighbouring country.
"The raid on the two premises in Rantau Panjang found 13,250 pieces of counterfeit disposable diapers, while another 156,000 pieces were found in the warehouse in Wakaf Baru, Tumpat," he said.
Ab Ghani was met at the taking and signing of the Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) by 300 Kelantan KPDNKK staff before the Kelantan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission director Datuk Moh Samsudin Yusof here.
In SUNGAI PETANI, the Sungai Petani branch of KPDNKK had also seized 65,000 pieces of counterfeit disposable diapers worth RM17,299 from a factory in Bakar Arang industrial area, yesterday.
Its enforcement chief, Mazlan Safar, said the raid was mounted following report from the trademark owner and intelligence findings.
However, he said no arrest was made.
"The factory has been operating for the past 24 years, but has only produced the diapers bearing the brand Popo Kids over the past two years for distribution in Rantau Panjang," he said in a statement today.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 8 (2) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011. First offenders face a RM10,000 fine for each item exhibited or jail not more than three years or both, while second offenders face a RM20,000 fine for each item exhibited or jail for not more than five years or both. — Bernama
