KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's efforts through the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) in empowering women through programmes such as Connecting the Unconnected (CTU), in which the potential of women in remote areas was unleashed, were highlighted at the 12th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad underlined such initiatives during her intervention at one of the sessions titled 'Digital Inclusion for Women: Scaling Up Our Efforts' held in conjunction with the Dec 18-21 forum, themed 'Shape Your Digital Future!'.
"She also spoke about the initiatives done by the Malaysian government in ensuring that women are not sidelined in the digitalisation process through the 'humanise and digitise' strategy," KKMM said in a statement today.
In addition, she highlighted the National Blue Ocean and Public-Private Partnership strategies in efforts concerning digital inclusion for women in which the respective strategies were aimed at complementing – not competing – one another.
On the sidelines of the forum, Sharifah Zarah also called on Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Datuk Amran Mohamed Zin.
A visit to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was also made to learn about the role and functions of IFRC.
The IGF is an annual global multi-stakeholder platform that facilitated the discussion of public policy issues pertaining to the Internet. — Bernama
