Workers with SPM qualification and below declining

PUTRAJAYA: The number of workers with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia Vokasional (SPMV) qualifications declined to 2.1 million in 2015 from 2.4 million in 2010, said Malaysia's chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said the annual growth rate recorded involving workers with SPM qualifications and below during that period was –2.8%.
The number of employees with SPM, SPMV qualifications or equivalent has increased to 3.7 million in 2015 from 2.9 million in 2010 with an annual growth rate of 5%.
"This may be attributed to the effectiveness of the country's education system, which shows the number of workers with SPM and SPMV qualifications and below, declining while those with SPM qualification and above are on the rise," he said when presenting the Economic Census 2016 Parameter, namely MyState statistics; statistics on employees, wages and halal statistics at the Statistics Department today.
The highest annual growth rate recorded involves employees with diploma, certificate or Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia qualifications, accounting for 14.6% or 984,000 individuals in 2010 to 1.9 million workers in 2015.
During the same period, bachelor's degree holders accounted for an annual growth rate of 9.7%, which saw an increase to 857,000 workers in 2015 from 539,000 workers in 2010.
Meanwhile, workers with post graduate qualifications recorded an annual growth rate of 8.5% from 58,000 in 2010 to 87,000 in 2015.
Mohd Uzir said 8.7 million workers were recorded in the private sector in 2015, an increase of 4.7% per annum from 2010.
Of the total 8.7 million workers, he said 5.9 million or 67.7% were men while 2.8 million workers or 32.3% were women, he said. – Bernama
