Chinese water meter reader to hang for drug trafficking

JOHOR BARU: A Chinese national was sentenced to death today at the High Court here for drug trafficking. Luo Dan, 28, cried after her lawyer translated the sentence to her.
The water meter reader from Wu Han, China, was convicted on trafficking 4.4kg of methamphetamine at the Senai International Airport on Oct 26, 2014.
Judicial Commissioner Collin Lawrence Sequerah in passing the sentence said from the amount of drug and the way she kept it in a bag, "there is no reason the accused did not know".
He said the defendant had failed to raise any reasonable doubts in her defence and the court convicted her under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 that carries the mandatory death sentence.
Luo was represented by counsel Norman Joseph Fernandez, who said she would appeal. DPP Syamimi Farhana Mumammad A. Aziz prosecuted.
The prosecution called 13 witnesses while the defence had two witnesses in the three-year trial.
According to the facts of the case, the drug was stored at the back portion of high-reel shoes, several high-reel shoes were put in a bag.
Earlier, the defendant told the court that the bag belonged to her African boyfriend. They planned to come together to Malaysia, but her boyfriend change his mind at the last minute, she said.
Luo claimed the bag was a gift for her boyfriend's Malaysian friends in Puchong.
She took the bag from Guan Zho, flew to Hong Kong, and then took another flight to Senai International Airport, where she was caught.
