KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Sports Council (FTSC) is against the decision of the National Sports Council (NSC) to drop weightlifting, taekwondo and sepak takraw from the 2018 Perak Malaysia Games (Sukma).
Its deputy chairman 1, Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan said they have spent RM1.5 million on development and preparation programmes for the three sports for the Perak Sukma in Sept 2018.
"These expenses include for the athletes and coaches, domestic and overseas programmes, food supplements, training attire and equipment in all three federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.
"We have conducted continuous development programmes soon after Sarawak Sukma last year," he told a media conference after chairing the FTSC management board meeting at Menara DBKL here, today.
The NSC decision to drop weightlifting, taekwondo and sepak takraw from Sukma followed its decision on Dec 12 to drop the three sports from the list of 19 core sports.
Reasons cited for the decision to drop weightlifting, taekwondo and sepak takraw were doping, internal conflict and poor performance.
Bala Mohan appealed to the NSC management board chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin not to drop the three sports from Perak Sukma.
At Sarawak Sukma, Federal Territories won six gold, two silver and four bronze from weightlifting, five gold and four silver from taekwondo and no medals from sepak takraw.
Federal Territories finished in fourth overall with 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals. — Bernama
