KOTA BELUD: About 1,000 primary and secondary school pupils enjoyed free haircuts and shoe-repair services at a back-to school programme, here today.
The programme, jointly organised by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, and Yayasan Jalinan Rakyat Kota Belud, started as early as 7.30am. It received encouraging support from parents.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, who attended the programme, said it was a community service to ease the burden of low-income parents.
He said the programme was open to all regardless of race, religion and political affiliation.
Housewife Arnie Soluin, 31, from Kampung Tambulion Ulu, when met at the event said, "The programme helps families to save money and this is the second year I'm attending the programme. I arrived here around 7am this morning".
Arnie who depends on the income of her husband, a bus driver, said that for low-income parents like them it was a very good programme and should be continued.
She said this year, she took her three school-going children to get the free haircut service.
Harris Paya, 41, from Kampung Pirasan, said he took his five children for the haircut service.
"This is indeed a good programme. If at the barber shop, the haircut fee is RM10 per person. So through today's programme, I saved RM50," he said. — Bernama
