Two armed robbery suspects arrested

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Two men believed to be involved in several armed robbery cases in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) here were detained in two raids in Bukit Mertajam early today.
SPT District Police Chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said in the first raid on a house in Taman Sejahtera Alma here at 12.10 am, police detained a 20-year-old man before detaining his 24-year-old friend in another raid in the same area.
"Police also seized several tools used by the suspects in the robberies, including knives and screwdrivers, as well as some robbed items, such as mobile phones and a number of handbags.
"The modus operandi of the two men was to carry out the robberies at night and their targets were mostly women walking alone," he told reporters.
He said the two unemployed suspects were believed to have been involved in such activities over the past few months and police believed that their arrest could solve at least 10 robbery cases.
Nik Ros Azhan said the two suspects, who have various criminal and drug-related records, had been remanded for four days to facilitate investigations.
Meantime, he said police detained two men, aged 33 and 40, by the roadside of Kampung Tok Konan on suspicion of being involved in a burglary and motorcycle theft case.
"They were on a motorcycle when police arrested them and inspection found that the motorcycle used was reported stolen. Further investigation also found they were involved in a burglary case in Bukit Mertajam," he added. — Bernama
