TAIPING: A total of 25 summonses were issued to motorcyclists during an operation against road bullies and 'mat rempit' (illegal racers) at Jalan Kamunting-Taiping here early today.
Taiping District Police acting chief Supt Razlam Ab Hamid said the summonses were issued for various offences such as not possessing licence, having expired road taxes, registration number plates not in compliance with the set standards, not having side mirrors, as well as for riding modified motorcycles.
He said the three-hour operation, which began at about 3am, was conducted by a police team from Bukit Aman's Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (IED), Perak Contingent IED, as well as personnel from the Taiping District Police Headquarters.
He said five motorcyclists were arrested, one of them a 15-year-old student.
"We saw several motorcycles being ridden by people who were racing among themselves, riding while leaning forward on the machines and in a 'zig-zag' fashion.
Razlam said all the suspects were detained before being taken to the Taiping Police Headquarters for further action.
