Qobin becomes first Malaysian Grand Slam Explorer following South Pole conquest

PUTRAJAYA: National explorer Muhammad Muqharabbin Mokhtaruddin (pix) has become the first Malaysian to be recognised as a "Grand Slam Explorer" following his latest conquest of the South Pole, today.
Popularly known as "Qobin", the explorer confirmed his achievement via satellite phone to the media after reaching the 90° point of the South Pole at 11.05am local time, today.
Having completed his 111km journey to the South Pole in seven days despite harsh terrain and conditions, he is expected to spend the night at the point before leaving for the Union Glacier, Antarctica on Friday morning.
It was reported that, Qobin had endured extreme cold temperatures of -26°C causing his fingers to suffer from prolonged numbness during his journey to the South Pole point.
The recognition as Grand Slam Explorer is awarded when one finishes climbing seven highest peaks in seven continents in the world, as well as exploring the North Pole and the South Pole.
Previously, Muhammad Muqharabbin succeeded in two missions which were among the conditions, namely, conquering the world's seven highest peaks in seven continents between 2004 to 2010 and skiing in the Arctic in April.
He is expected to return to Malaysia by Sunday.
