RTD to set up special committee to investigate AES vandalism

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will set up a special committee to investigate and take action against irresponsible parties who have vandalised the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras.
Its director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Khalid said the formation of the committee was also aimed at curbing such incident from recurring.
"The formation of the committee is for us to discuss what action needs to be taken (against those involved) with the issue ... we will announce any development (on the matter) next year," he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the Setiawangsa parliamentary constituency MyPrihatin programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Keramat Wangsa here today.
On Tuesday, it was reported that an AES camera installed in Pagoh, Johor along Km151.4 (northbound) of the North-South Expressway had been damaged again. It was the second incident after the traffic enforcement system at the same location was vandalised on Sept 10.
In the meantime, Shaharuddin dismissed the negative perception of some people towards the AES which was said to be intentionally installed merely to find fault with drivers.
"We did not install the cameras to trap drivers, in fact, we are encouraging prudent driving.
"We have also put the signage along the roads to alert drivers of the cameras. If the drivers are aware of the signage, they will slow down their vehicle," he said.
Earlier, at the event, which was organised by the RTD Kuala Lumpur, a total of 284 participants obtained the B2 motorcycle riding licence. The MyPrihatin programme was introduced for people living in suburban and rural areas to get their licence at a minimal fee. — Bernama
