PETALING JAYA: The crime index in Petaling Jaya has shown a decrease last year compared to the corresponding period in 2016.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Zani Che Din said the overall crime index recorded last year in the district has gone down by 15% compared to 2016.
"The district police headquarters managed to achieve the 10% target set by the federal police. This does not mean that we are satisfied with it but combating crime is an ongoing process and we will do better next time.
In 2016, a total of 5,007 cases were recorded, but in the same period last year, only 4,215 cases were recorded. It is a reduction of 792 cases," he told reporters after attending the "Back to School Programme" held at SK La Salle here today.
The number of snatch theft and roadside robbery cases in 2016 was 1,255, while 965 cases was recorded in 2017.
He pointed out that the district police would be placing importance and priority on street crimes as part of their crime-fighting responsibilities this year.
"Crimes such as snatch theft and robberies are usually the main contributors in the crime index report. These crimes make up a big portion of the reports received even though the crime index has gone down," Mohd Zani added.
Meanwhile, police are still in the midst of ascertaining the identity of the suspects involved in an incident where three people were injured after they were hit by an explosive modified from fireworks at the Luther Centre Church, in Jalan Utara here on New Year's Day.
At the event, about 30 Standard One students received goodie bags during the program aimed at fostering a closer relationship between school authorities and the police.
