31 schools closed on second day of schooling

KUANTAN: A total of 31 schools nationwide were forced to remain closed today due to rising flood waters, ten more than yesterday.
Fifteen schools in Pahang were closed today, 11 of them remaining closed since the first day on Tuesday of the new school year and four others having had to close today.
Pahang director of education Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said these schools, which were either flooded or the access roads were submerged, were located in the Kuantan, Pekan, Jerantut and Lipis districts.
"In Kuantan, nine schools that could not start their first day of school on Tuesday are still closed, they being Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Lembing, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) (SJKC) Sungai Lembing, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nadak, SK Sungai Lembing, SK Sungai Emas, SJKC Panching, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) (SJKT) Kuala Reman, SK Panching and SK Bukit Kuin.
"An additional three schools were closed today, namely, SJK ( C ) Yoke Shian, SK Jaya Gading and SJK (T) Taman Tas, making a total 12 schools closed in the district," he said.
He said two other schools which were unable to open on the first day of the new school year on Tuesday were SK Aceh in Pekan with 276 students and 28 teachers and SK Gintong in Jerantut with 28 students and 12 teachers.
SJK (C) Mela in Lipis had to close today due to the floods, he added.
In KELANTAN, six schools in two districts, with a total enrolment of 1,015, remained closed due to floods.
Kelantan Education Department director Muhammad Zahari Othman, in a statement, said three of the schools were in Kuala Krai, namely SK Bahagia, SK Ladang Taku and SK Pasir Kelang, with 347 students.
The other three were in Tanah Merah, namely SK Ladang Kerilla, SK Sokor and SMK Ladang Kerilla, with a total of 668 students, he added.
In SABAH, eight primary schools in two districts did not open today because of floods.
In SARAWAK, two primary schools have yet to begin the new school session this year due to the floods.
