Homeowner kills thief during attempted robbery

JOHOR BARU: A man who allegedly broke into a home at Jalan Jenawai 3, Taman Puteri Wangsa in Ulu Tiram here, was killed during a struggle with the homeowner.
In the 2.45pm incident on Wednesday, the suspect had broken into the house through a window, and armed with a screwdriver, confronted the 32-year-old resident in the master bedroom.
Johor Baru Selatan district police chief ACP Shahurinain Jais said the suspect threatened the owner and ordered him to surrender all his valuables.
The suspect then forced the man to unlock the kitchen door in order for him to escape. It was at this point that the victim managed to grab a kitchen knife and asked the suspect to return the items that he had taken.
A scuffle ensued when the suspect refused to do so.
In a statement issued today, Shahurinain said the homeowner, who suffered injuries in the incident, had been sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment, and is currently under police custody.
The suspect sustained injuries to his head, hand and leg during the altercation.
Shahurinain said the suspect has an extensive criminal record, with 14 previous cases, including for drug related cases.
He said the police found a wallet, RM730 cash, a gold ring and a mobile phone in the suspect's possession.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
