KUALA LUMPUR: The first Malaysian golfer to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM), Gavin Kyle Green,24, today received another three years backing from Maybank for the historic achievement.
Maybank, which sponsored Green for three years since 2015 (when he was appointed as Maybank's Asean Ambassador), said with the support, he can further hone his skills and compete at international level.
Maybank today announced its extended multi-year sponsorship for another three years. The initiative was part of Maybank's ongoing commitment to developing excellence in golf across Asean.
Green, who turned professional in 2015 and competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, emerged as the second youngest golfer to win the Asian Tour OOM, after his maiden victory at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters in October and finished as runners-up thrice in 2017.
"Green is an example of an effective talent development initiative, where Maybank empowers dedicated, focused and ambitious young talents and help them reach new heights," said Maybank group president and chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Farid Alias said in a statement, today.
"More than a decade ago, we decided to focus our efforts towards identifying, training and nurturing the best-golfing talents we could find in Asean. Today, we are starting to see those efforts bear fruit with new and upcoming golfers from Malaysia and the region making waves at international level," he added.
Maybank is the first financial institution in Malaysia to champion a structured long-term development of golf in Malaysia and across the Asean region, beginning its support of the game since 2006.
It includes the direct sponsorship of selected players; creating playing platforms for Malaysian and Asean talent to experience international tournaments; monetary support through the prize purses sponsored.
The creation, maintenance and promotion of Maybank Championship allows aspiring players the perfect platform to springboard to international success in Malaysia.
The banking institution had sponsored local professional golfers Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin.
Meanwhile, Green said he was honoured with the support from the financial institution.
"It is truly an exceptional honour to continue my longstanding partnership with Maybank as its Asean Ambassador in golf. Maybank and Maybank Championship has definitely opened up many doors for me throughout my career as it is a great platform for me to meet other world class players and represent our beautiful country, Malaysia," said Green as quoted in a statement.
The long-hitting Green will represent Malaysia in the 3rd Maybank Championship at Saujana Golf and Country Club, Subang, from Feb 1-4. — Bernama
