Number of T'gganu flood victims climb to 2,159 Friday morning

KUALA TERENGGANU: A clash between a huge high tide with a large discharge of river water occurred in Kemaman last night causing the number of flood victims in the district to swell.
Terengganu Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lt Col Che Adam A Rahman said even though the rain had stopped, river water discharge from the interior could not flow into sea at Kuala Kemaman as river water met a huge high tide moving in last night.
"This caused many low-lying areas in Chukai to be inundated early this morning and currently there are 2,159 flood evacuees from 541 families in two districts, Kemaman and Dungun as at 8am compared to 1,364 people from 340 families last night.
"Two more evacuation centres were opened in Kemaman to accommodate the additional flood victims, making a total of 17 relief centres in operation in Terengganu," he said.
Kemaman district remained as the worst hit area with 1,953 victims from 464 families at 15 shelters compared with 1,158 victims (263 families in 13 relief centres) while in Dungun, the number of flood victims stayed at 206 people (77 families ) in two evacuation centres.
Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Mentok continued to record the highest number of flood victims with 627 people from 131 families compared to 473 people (100 families ) last night.
There were also more evacuees at Binjai (84 people - 17 families) and SK Chukai (159 people - 40 families).
The two new relief centres opened were at Kemaman Municipal Council hall housing 286 victims (79 families) and SK Seri Iman (195 people from 51 families).
The number of evacuees sheltered at other relief centres remained unchanged at Pulau Tempurung surau with 105 people from 18 families, Kampung Batu 14 Mosque (13 people - four families), Kampung Batu 16 Tebak Mosque (50 people - 14 families), Felda Seberang Tayor civil hall (226 people - 60 families), Teladas community hall ( 23 people with four families ) and Haji Othman surau in Kampung Seberang Tayor Hulu (59 people - 17 families).
Similarly, the situation at Lubuk Megat evacuation centre stayed at 23 people from four families with Kampung Ban Ho surau in Air Putih with 26 people from five families, Kampung Pasir Gajah (12 people - four families) and Batu 14 community hall (65 people - 16 families).
In Dungun, there was no change to the number of evacuees at Kampung Shukor community hall with 175 people (61 families) and Pasir Raja community hall with 77 people (31 families). — Bernama
