BUTTERWORTH: Flash floods have struck Penang again just five days into the New Year with 20 locations near here reportedly overwhelmed.
Most parts of the state have been experiencing bad weather for the last two days as the easterly monsoon weather reaches its end, and the rain intensified last night.
A spokesperson with the Seberang Prai Municipality Council (MPSP), who confirmed the flooding, said that the waters rose from 2am to 5am today.
It was again attributed to the drainage system's inability to cope with the water volume and to discharge it to the sea.
Just two months ago, Penang was inundated with the highest rainfall on record and it went on to disrupt lives of thousands of people.
A total of 372mm of rainfall fell during the 16 consecutive hours of Nov 4 and 5, where floodwaters rose and stayed in some places for up to a week.
It also triggered landslides and sinkholes, while uprooting tens of trees.
