PETALING JAYA: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pix) will be released from prison on June 8, two days ahead of schedule.
Prisons Department director-general, Datuk Sri Zulkifli Omar, today said: "As his release date June 10 falls on a Sunday and 9 would be a Satuday, he will be released on June 8".
He added that based on the calculation of the days made according to the Section 44 of the Prison Act (1995) and Rule No. 43 (1)(a) of the Prisons Regulations and Anwar's release date would fall on June 10.
The Act and the Regulations allow a 1/3 remittance from the original sentencing to any inmates who have carried out their sentence more than a month.
Zulkifli also said until today the Prison Department and Sungai Buloh Prison had not received any warrants or orders from the authorities to change the release date.
"The release date of June 8 has nothing to do with the parole system or any orders from the Pardons Board," he said.
Anwar was sentenced to five years' jail on Feb 10, 2015, for sodomising his former assistant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
