High Court upholds sentence on corrupt policeman

ALOR STAR: The High Court here today upheld the conviction and sentence imposed by a lower court on a policeman who was found guilty with soliciting and accepting a RM150 in 2012.
Judge Chan Jit Li, in his decision, upheld the 16-year imprisonment and RM20,000 fine imposed by the sessions court on Sazali Hashim, 58.
On July 24 last year, sessions court judge Azhar Mokhtar sentenced Sazali to eight years jail and fine of RM10,000 on each count after finding him guilty of the charges.
However, he was ordered to serve the jail sentences concurrently from the date of sentence.
Sazali, then attached at the Kuah police station in Langkawi, was charged with soliciting RM150 from one Mohd Asri Bulat as an inducement to not take action against him for allegedly in possession of ketum juice and the return of his identity card.
The offence was committed at a road block at Jalan Batu Asah, Langkawi, between 11 am and noon on Oct 18, 2012.
On the charge of accepting the bribe, also from Mohd Asri and for the same amount and for the same purpose, the offence was committed at about 7 pm on the same day at Restoran Selihah Seafood in Langkawi.
Deputy public prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission A.Hafiizh Abu Bakar prosecuted, while lawyer Datuk Naran Singh represented Sazali. — Bernama
