JOHOR BARU: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has hijacked the opposition after the former premier was named as the coalition's choice for prime minister.
He said Mahathir who has been in and out of Umno several times, had successfully hijacked the struggle of the opposition pact, especially PKR, which was formed to fight for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under Mahathir's premiership.
When asked to comment on whether the influence of the veteran politician would have an impact on the outcome of the 14th General Election(GE14), he said several veteran politicians had made their last political struggle in their twilight years.
"It is the last political struggle of their lives," he told reporters here, after the opening of a Koperasi Iskandar Malaysia Bhd (imCOOP) shop at Taman Desa Mutiara here yesterday.
Mohamed Khaled expressed confidence that the improved performance of the ringgit and the economy would prove an advantage to Barisan Nasional in GE14.
On Sunday, Pakatan Harapan (PH) officially named Mahathir as its prime minister candidate, while PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was named as the coalition's choice for deputy prime minister.
The announcement was made by PH at its convention, held at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said the imCOOP shop would provide essential goods at cheaper prices for the urban poor.
