Imminent facelift for Sentul Market

KUALA LUMPUR: Plans are on the drawing board to redevelop the dilapidated Sentul Market.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is studying how best to redevelop the market that is located in a congested area, said DBKL Economic Planning and Development Department director Azmi Abdul Hamid.
"The redevelopment may require the use of adjacent land to expand the market and provide a multi-level car park," he said to Bernama.
He also said that the aged infrastructure was also a reason for the inadequate supply of water at the market.
A check by Bernama found old amenities at the market and the traders expressed the hope that DBKL would help to solve their problems as soon as possible.
Stall-holder Yaacop Mat Noor, 72, said he hoped that the old amenities would be repaired immediately and the cleanliness of the market upgraded.
Fishmonger R. Santha, 50, said she hoped that the water supply could be restored to normal.
"Furthermore, the absence of lights at the market makes it difficult for us to bring in our wares very early in the morning when it is still dark. Thefts have also occurred because of the absence of the lights," said the trader who had been selling fish at the market for the past 30 years.
Fruit seller J. C. Liew, 30, said she hoped that the issue of illegal traders around the market would be resolved, which she felt could also address the traffic congestion and parking problem. — Bernama
