TASEK GELUGOR: Teluk Air Tawar assemblyman, Datuk Jahara Hamid, is ready to step down and give way to a winnable and potential candidate to contest in her constituency in the incoming 14th General Election (GE14).
Jahara, who has served as the Teluk Air Tawar assemblyman for 24 years, said she appreciated that Umno had given her the chances to make her contribution to the society and also serve the people in the constituency.
"It is no problem for me to do so as I am ready to go because I think we should give the opportunities to other people, especially the young and energetic party members, to represent the voters here.
"I am also ready to advise the candidate," she told reporters after officiating the Touchpoint Cabinet Away Day 2.0 programme at a premise in Jalan Permatang Binjai here today.
Jahara, who is also Penang opposition party leader, added that she also had told Penang Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman of the matter.
She said she is still the party Wanita chief in the parliamentary constituency. Therefore, she would be leading the Wanita Wing members to work hard in the GE14 to ensure the party could win the parliament and state seats in Tasek Gelugor.
On the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) contesting in Tasek Gelugor parliamentary constituency here, Jahara said it definitely would affect some voters here.
However, she believed the people would give their mandate to Umno as long as they work hard for the sake of the public interest.
"The people are aware now after Penang state government was led by DAP which always gives their 'bulan bintang' promise to them, but it is hard to achieve.
"So, it is the same as the PPBM which is giving the similar 'bulan bintang' promises to obtain the people's votes.
"However, the voters are smart now, they would support a candidate who is willing to serve them," she said.
