Lorry driver fined RM3.5k for threatening to burn house, damage motorcycle

KUALA LUMPUR: A rubbish lorry driver was fined RM3,500 in default of three months' jail by the magistrate's court here today for threatening to burn down a house and committing mischief by damaging a motorcycle belonging to a woman.
Magistrate Maizatul Abd Rahman meted out the sentence on A. Kalaivanan, 40, after he pleaded guilty to threatening S. Rekha, 33, by uttering the words 'want to burn house' belonging to the victim at Block 22A, Jalan Chempedak, off Jalan Perhentian here at 10.45pm on Jan 6.
The father of five was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum imprisonment of seven years, or fine, or both upon conviction.
He also pleaded guilty to committing mischief by breaking and damaging the victim's motorcycle components causing her to incur a loss of RM1,500 at the same place, time and date under Section 427 of the Penal Code.
The court sentenced him to a fine of RM1,500 in default of one month's jail term for the first charge and RM2,000 or an imprisonment of two months for the second charge.
Earlier the accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a minimum fine on the grounds that he was the sole bread winner and apologised for his actions, while deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim requested for a deterrent sentence. — Bernama
