ALOR STAR: Kedah Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is confident that Barisan Nasional (BN) will be able to retain the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the 14th general election (GE14).
He said he was also confident that BN would retain the Ayer Hangat and Kuah state seats within the parliamentary constituency which the ruling coalition had held for so long.
"Whoever is fielded for BN, we believe we can retain these three seats as the voters in Langkawi can see and evaluate for themselves the efforts made by the federal government and state government in developing Langkawi.
"If Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad or anyone else wants to contest there (Langkawi), they can but it is only for the people of Langkawi to lose."
He said this when asked to comment on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Dr Mahathir's willingness to contest one of three seats – Putrajaya, Langkawi and Kubang Pasu – in GE14.
"It was not a deed, but certainly his (Dr Mahathir) duty to develop Langkawi when he was prime minister at the time. Now the task of developing Langkawi is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's.
"The people of Langkawi should not be confused about this. If not under BN, he (Dr Mahathir) would not have been able to develop Langkawi as only a BN elected representative could bring development to this island and to whichever area in this state," he said.
Ahmad Bashah also said that PPBM was incapable of steering Pakatan Harapan in Kedah due to the conflict of interest between PPBM, DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).
"They (opposition parties) themselves are in disarray. Just look at the tussle among them for seats to contest which is ongoing. If they can't even resolve that, how are they going to govern the country? The people are not stupid, they can evaluate for themselves.
"The people are also fed up. Are we going to allow him (Dr Mahathir) to repeat his mistakes made when he was prime minister for 22 years from 1981 until 2003," katanya. — Bernama
