KUALA LUMPUR: The government of today is one that cares for the need of the youth, especially those in the millennial group, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak stressed.
Speaking in front of thousands of E-sports enthusiasts, Najib said the government must understand the needs of the future by adapting to the new changes brought by the youth.
While admitting that he did not understand the gaming sub-culture embraced by the youth today, Najib said his administration was not the type that rejected changes that it could not comprehend.
"I believe as a government, we must be one that cares for the young people.
"We must be the government who understands the language of young people, and we must be a government that will serve the needs and aspirations of the young," Najib said in his speech at the Malaysia Cyber Games held at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Najib said the National Transformation 2050 initiative introduced by the government was meant to prepare the current generation to be at the country's forefront in the next 30 years.
"We must be future-focused, we must be youth-oriented and we must be digitally savvy. This is the government of today," he said.
"I hope the youth can have the trust that we are the government that will represent the young people and to give you a better nation and better Malaysia," he added.
Commenting on E-sports, Najib said the cyber games industry in Malaysia would continue to receive the support of the government.
He said embracing the relatively new industry would open up more opportunities for the country to prosper in the digital economy, in line with the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Najib also gave his nod on the suggestion to recognise the Malaysia Cyber Games as an official association representing the E-sports community in the country.
"When we have such body, we will be able to plan more systematically the development in this interesting field," he said.
