Telupid NRD head jailed 18 months, fined RM25,000 for graft

SANDAKAN: A National Registration Department (NRD) registration assistant was sentenced to 18 months' jail and fined RM25,000, in default six months' jail, by the Sessions Court here yesterday for accepting a RM5,000 bribe in 2010.
The Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), in a statement today, said the sentence on Edwin Ajin, 44, was handed down by Judge Datuk Ishak Bakri after finding him guilty.
Edwin, who was the officer-in-charge of the Telupid NRD office when the offence was committed, was charged under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
He was charged with receiving the bribe from Jamail bin Sungah through one Catherine @ Sarimah binti Enggoh as an inducement for action not to be taken against Jamail for allegedly having in possession of a fake identity card and one James Kosou who was linked to the case.
Edwin was charged with committing the offence at about 11.30am on Oct 26, 2010 Hotel Paris Inn Jalan Leboh 3, Bandar Sandakan.
However, the court allowed a stay of execution of the sentence pending an appeal to the High Court and set bail at RM10,000 in one surety .
