JELI: The Kelantan Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department today relocated two bull elephants caught in a village here at the Terengganu National Park.
The elephants, aged 15 and 16 respectively and weighing three tonnes each, were caught last Saturday in Kampung Sungai Long after villagers complained on the same day that they had destroyed their oil palm, rubber and banana crops, said department assistant director Adnan Ismail.
The relocation of the pachyderms took about five hours from 8am and was carried out with the cooperation of the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang, he said.
"We used two cow elephants, Rambai and Abot, as decoys to help get the elephants onto two lorries to be transported to the Terengganu National Park," he said to reporters here.
Adnan said 17 Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department personnel were engaged in the relocation exercise.
He advised the people against trying to chase away rogue elephants by themselves. — Bernama
