PETALING JAYA: The fate of Furby remains in limbo a week after a Singaporean businessman was fined RM8,000, in default eight-months jail, by the magistrate's court here for animal abuse.
Furby's owner M. Siva who works as a head security guard in Taman Melody, Puchong said the Selangor Veterinary Department has yet to give him a bill for Furby's upkeep while under the department's care.
"The Department said that it would need some time to finalise the bill. Once they have decided on the bill, only then will they notify me," he told theSun.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Veterinary Department had said earlier that the matter of returning Furby to its owner is complicated as there are a few people listed as its owner.
"We need to determine who is the owner first, because in our records the dog has an owner and the court has ordered for the dog to be returned to its rightful owner. There is also the possibility of the charges that the owner would need to pay for the time we took care of him. I am not sure if there would be charges. This is up to the superiors," the DVS spokesperson had said previously.
On Jan 8, the Petaling Jaya magistrate court sentenced Yee Kok Chew, 57, after he pleaded guilty to hitting Furby at a residential area in Puchong at about 8.49pm on April 2, 2017.
The charge came under Section 44(1)(a) of the Animal Act 1953, read together with the Animal Act (Amendment 2013), is punishable with a fine of not more than RM50,000, or a one-year prison term, or both upon conviction.
Closed-circuit television footage of the incident which went viral on social media caused outrage among netizens who demanded the abuser to be charged.
