PUTRAJAYA: The life-saving feat of a nurse from Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Bahru, and a student of Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre in Kuala Lumpur, during two fire incidents, earned them recognition from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
Norsuhaily Suleiman, 24, and Ahmad Ihsan Husin, 16, were among 23 recipients of certificates of appreciation from JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim at the JBPM Annual Parade 2018, here today.
Norsuhaily, who saved her colleague in a fire incident at HSA's Intensive Care Unit in Oct 2016, said the award was expected to inspire all HSA staff who went all out to help during the fire.
"In the incident, I tried to save a friend but my hands were unable to grip because of breathing difficulty. My friend was lucky because my husband who served as a technical officer came to her rescue," she said when recounting the incident to Bernama.
As a result of the incident, Norsuhaily was forced to receive treatment at the ICU ward for 19 days for having inhaled too much smoke and found it difficult to talk even now.
"In the first two months of treatment, I suffered the loss of my voice. After that, my voice became hoarse and according to doctors it will never be normal again," Norsuhaily said.
In the 9am incident on Oct 25, 2016, six patients were killed in the fire at HSA's ICU ward, in which three hospital staff were also injured.
For Ahmad Ihsan, he was still traumatised by the fire at Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Centre in Sept 2017, that claimed the lives of 21 students and two teachers.
The teen, who rescued the baby of the tahfiz centre supervisor during the fire, said he was still agonised and disappointed that he was not able to save his other friends as the fire had spread quickly. He was also injured on the hand in the incident.
.At the event, 17 media practitioners also received certificates of appreciation from JBPM, among them were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalist Rohani Ibrahim, Utusan Malaysia journalist Sharaimei Shaik Ahmedullah, News Straits Times Press photographer Abdul Rahim Rahmat and TV3 journalist Siti Khadijah Jaafar and Ahmad Fazli Ahmad. — Bernama
