GEORGE TOWN: No reports have been lodged over a viral video footage which allegedly took place in Penang of a man slapping a woman for apparently not wearing a headscarf at a bus-stop.
Although the video has gone viral, especially after it was uploaded by UK's Daily Mail news portal, Penang Religious Affairs committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said no report has been lodged to the religious authorities.
"Frankly, it may be the work of an unsound man, and we should not entertain such people as they give a wrong impression of our religion," he said.
The video shows a man in dark attire questioning one of the women waiting at the bus stop over her choice of dressing.
The man could be heard speaking loudly and scolding the woman for not following religious custom, but the woman remained unperturbed.
The footage shows the woman trying to ignore the man and attempting to make a call on her mobile phone, at this point, the man raises his hand and slaps her.
Abdul Malik said that the incident was unfortunate and uncalled for.
"This man is a mad guy," he told theSun.
Penang Island City Council councillor Syerleena Abdul Rashid said she had asked the council to assist in identifying the bus stop mentioned in the video.
"I have asked the police and they said no one has lodged a police report," she said.
On suspicion that the women at the bus stop were foreigners, she said what matters is that all human beings must be treated with respect.
"There are a lot of questions surrounding the mental state of the man but even if he is mentally unstable, this video and his act must be addressed to avoid others from emulating it," she said.
