55 involved in Ah Long activities in Kuantan nabbed

KUANTAN: The police have detained 55 people believed to be involved in illegal money-lending (Ah Long) activities in the district last year.
Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said of the total, 15 people had been brought to the court.
"Those detained were not just the moneylenders but also those who helped promote the activities such as distributing leaflets and putting up banners.
"Moneylenders (individuals or companies) who operate without a licence can be charged under Section 5 (2) of the Moneylenders Act while those who promote the activities can be charged with abetment," he told reporters at the 'Operasi Turun Sepanduk Ah Long' here today.
About 3,500 illegal moneylender advertisements were removed during the operation. — Bernama
