SADAO: For the convenience of Malaysians wishing to travel to Thailand, a 2.4ha car park is currently under construction near the sports field here.
Sadao mayor Sumet Sasithorn said work on the parking lot began in December and, upon completion in May, it would be able to accommodate about 200 cars at a time.
"The construction of the parking lot at a cost of 40 million Baht (RM5 million) is to facilitate Malaysians, especially those who want to continue their journey into the country.
"Here, we will provide vehicle rentals and public transport services to take travellers elsewhere. This parking area is also strategically located as it is 12 km from the Bukit Kayu Hitam border gate and Padang Besar, Perlis," he said when receiving a visit by the Kedah Elite Media Club of Kedah here.
He said a water theme park would also be constructed near the parking facility and would be operational in two years to attract foreign tourists especially Malaysians.
Sumet said business premises and a weekly market (on Monday) would also be made available in the area to enable tourists to buy food and souvenirs.
"So, the overall costs including parking facility will come to about 200 million Baht (RM24.8 million). It is hoped that the developments will spur the tourism industry here," he said.
He said Malaysian tourists could also take part in the recreational activities at the sports field near the parking lot.
"Sadao is renowned among tourists, especially Malaysians, as it is an important route to Hadyai and other destinations (in Thailand). The availability of the parking lot and theme park are added value for tourists to come here," he added. — Bernama
