PETALING JAYA: Police seized four illegally modified bicycles in an operation at a residential area near Sri Damansara yesterday.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Zani Che Din said the bikes were seized from four teenagers near the People's Housing Project flats there.
"Following a tip-off, an operation was initiated at 3pm. The riders were all aged between14 and 15 years old," he said today.
Following the seizure, police have recorded statements from the boys and their parents.
The bikes were modified, which is in violation of Rule 42(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
Riders of illegally modified bicycles are also known as Mat Lajak group. It was a trend in Johor and has now been spotted in Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
These youngsters, who ride modified bicycles and perform stunts on public roads, pose a hazard to road users and endanger their own lives.
Mat Lajak came to light after a case where a car ploughed into a group of cyclists and claimed eight lives at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, Johor Baru around 3am on Feb last year.
