Viralled photo of 'bogus' cops, two men lodge police reports

KUALA BERANG: Two men lodged police reports early today over a picture viralled on WhatsApp, of two individuals in a car who were wrongly accused of impersonating as police personnel from the Hulu Terengganu district police headquarters narcotics branch.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief, DSP Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the duo aged 36 and 31, arrived at the police station at 12.30am after realising that their photo had gone viral on the messaging application.
"Our investigation found that they had not been involved in any extortion activity around the border areas of Marang, Setiu, Dungun and Hulu Terengganu as alleged.
"Police here give a stern warning against spreading unverified news. We are investigating to track down those who have spread the false news," he said in a statement, here, today
Mohd Adli said action could also be taken against those who spread false news or information that could cause fear or uneasiness to the public.
Meanwhile, he also called on the public to channel any information on crime taking place in their area via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application which can be downloaded for free from the Royal Malaysian Police website, Google Play and App Store.
"Members of the public need to register as a VSP member before they can share any information. They can also use a pseudonym so as not to reveal their identity," he said, adding that up to November last year, 41,020 people had registered as VSP members in Terengganu. — Bernama
