Duo with tracking devices nabbed after robbery

IPOH: Two criminals who had been fitted with electronic monitoring devices (EMD) under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) to track their movements were arrested after they robbed a convenience store in Jalan Sibilin on Sunday.
Ipoh City police chief ACP Mohd Ali Thamby said the arrests of the duo was the first such case in the district.
He said the men, armed with knives, dashed into the store and held up the owner and an employee at about 8pm.
"The robbers were attempting to make their escape when the store owner fought back and apprehended one of them.
The other 32-year-old suspect from Kampung Tengku Hussein was later detained at a shoplot in Jalan Silibin.
The first suspect, from Hulu Langat in Selangor, had eight criminal records for theft, drugs, robbery, break-ins and criminal intimidation, while the second detainee had six records related to drugs, robbery and theft.
Police recovered from the suspects RM266 in cash and several items that were taken from the convenience store.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code.
EMDs are strapped to the ankles of criminals detained under Poca, that was amended in 2013 to allow for detention without trial. It was implemented to address serious and organised crimes following the repeal of the Internal Security Act 1960.
Once fitted, the wearer of the device would be tracked by the police 24 hours a day.
