PETALING JAYA: A 55-year-old caretaker who was arrested for raping and molesting underaged girls at a shelter for poor and underprivileged children had previously portrayed himself as a religious man to the general public.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said that it was appalling to learn that a man with a "high understanding of religion" would resort to committing such despicable acts.
"I cannot tell off the cuff how many victims are involved but there are a few. They are underaged and we are disturbed by this, as to how he could seduce a young child sexually, being a person who is said to be religiously at a high level. It is a terrible act. Our investigations are ongoing and we are ensuring we have a watertight case to charge the suspect."
Asked if all six children, aged between 10 and 12, at the centre were victims of the suspect, Mazlan said it was still being investigated and that it will depend on the outcome of medical examinations on the victims.
He said police are also considering action against the man's 29-year-old wife, as she was allegedly aware of her husband's actions, but had chosen to be silent.
Police reports were lodged in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor against the caretaker by two 12-year-old girls – one who alleged she was molested by the suspect in Jinjang, and the other who is an inmate of the welfare home in Ampang alleged that she was raped on several occasions.
It is learnt that a third victim, another girl at the home was also subjected to the sexual assaults.
For over a year since the centre began its operations, the suspected paedophile had allegedly molested, captured nude photos of the girls and peeped on them when they took their baths on numerous occasions.
The Selangor sexual crimes, domestic violence and child abuse investigations division (D11) is interviewing other inmates of the home at the child-interview-centre (CIC) to acertain if they too had suffered the same fate.
On Tuesday, police obtained an extension to the remand order on the suspect and his wife by seven days and six days, respectively.
