REMBAU: The Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Kundur Hulu, near here, continues to be entrusted with supplying bamboo, locally known as buluh betong, to the giant pandas at the National Zoo for five more years.
Its chairman, Zubir Jamal said the agreement on supplying the bamboo was renewed two days ago after it ended on Dec 31, 2017.
"The agreement was made between Zoo Negara and Koperasi Kariah Masjid Kundur Hulu Rembau Bhd which manages the bamboo supply. The signing ceremony was held at the zoo with me, as chairman of the village cooperative, signing it with Zoo Negara president, Datuk Zaharin Md Arif.
"According to the agreement, Zoo Negara will collect the bamboo from the village twice a week to ensure freshness of the bamboo for the pandas," he told Bernama, here, today.
He said the previous agreement on the bamboo supply was for a period of three years.
"The pair of adult pandas at the zoo simply loves the buluh betong grown in our village and we have been supplying it to the zoo since 2015," he said.
Xing Xing and Liang Liang were loaned by the Chinese government to Malaysia for a period of 10 years under an agreement between the two countries to mark 40 years of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations. — Bernama
