KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak today said that he viewed seriously the report on the leak of personal data of organ donors in the country.
He said the Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP) under his ministry was in the midst of investigating the matter with the police.
"Further information on the leak will be provided by the JPDP once the investigations are completed.
"Any quarters found involved will face legal action," he said in a statement, here today.
Salleh also urged those involved in processing personal data or managing database systems to maintain their integrity and efficiency to ensure that their data security systems would not leak or suffer abuse.
The leak of personal details, such as the donor's code, full name, MyKad number and telephone number, was reported to have involved over 220,000 organ donors in Malaysia.
Commenting on the same issue after opening the Congress of Successful Young Entrepreneurs Generation (GMB) 2018 here, Salleh said efforts should be taken to improve data security in the country to ensure that the data would be protected at all times and not shared without permission.
He said the ministry had also prepared several regulations that must be adhered to by data holders and users to prevent leaks.
"Each data operator should improve the level of their data security. Right now, there are various data protection technologies available," he told reporters.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Salleh said the congress was the best platform for young entrepreneurs to gather new information and learn new technologies to expand their businesses and stay competitive.
"This is a practical initiative to help produce more young entrepreneurs and strengthen their businesses," he added.
The two-day congress, which began yesterday, was attended by over 3,000 entrepreneurs. — Bernama
