KUALA LUMPUR: Some 3,000 needy senior citizens from Klang Valley received an early Chinese New Year present of ang pows and mini hampers, courtesy of Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd's festive donations.
The goodwill donation campaign is part of the company's corporate social responsibility efforts and the 30th anniversary celebration of the campaign.
Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd executive director Vincent Seow said this is the company's biggest annual charity event and pre-Chinese New Year celebration in the country.
"It is through this campaign that we hope to be able to achieve the objective of instilling positive values such as respecting and caring for the elders," Seow said in his welcoming speech prior to the launch of the campaign.
Seow added that the donation campaign was also held simultaneously in 10 other places - Ulu Yam, Kajang, Penang, Bukit Mertajam, Sungai Petani, Ipoh, Johor Baru, Pontian, Seremban and Malacca.
The campaign is set to benefit 15,000 senior citizens nationwide.
Also in attendance to hand the donations were Deputy Finance Minister II Datuk Lee Chee Leong, Berjaya Sports Toto Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Robin Tan and Berjaya Sports Toto Sdn Bhd executive director Nerine Tan.
Meanwhile in Penang, Chinese Town Hall Chairman Datuk Khor Teng Hor handed out the gifts to the beneficiaries at the Lee Sih Chong Soo Association.
Khor praised Sports Toto for giving back a portion of the proceeds earned back to society, especially to those in need.
"For the last eight years, Sports Toto has been inviting me to this event to give my speech and hand out the donations to the needy, especially senior citizens," said Khor.
Other than festive donations, the company also contributes substantial amounts annually to the National Sports Council and sporting events organised by local charities.
