ALOR STAR: Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is confident the Chinese New Year festival next month will continue to be celebrated in a spirit of togetherness that could further strengthen racial unity among the people.
He said every time a festival was being celebrated, all races would help each other and join in the celebration regardless of racial, religious or family backgrounds that made Malaysia truly unique with its plural society.
"Whenever this festival is celebrated, all races will help each other ... this is proof that racial harmony in our society is still strong," he told reporters when presenting aid to 638 recipients from diverse racial backgrounds, including senior citizens, single mothers, and disabled persons, here today in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year.
Ahmad Bashah said the state government always supported efforts by any associations or non- governmental organisations to help the less fortunate regardless of race.
Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Chong Wei Chun, 59, said he was grateful to have been given the assistance that could help him and his family cover daily necessities and enhance fellowship among other races. — Bernama
