Perlis BN candidates must meet people's needs: Shahidan Kassim
SANGLANG (Perlis): Perlis Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates chosen to stand in the 14th General Election (GE14) should meet the needs of the people, especially voters, said its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim.
He said Perlis' politics was different from other states, particularly big states that are developed because the people in the state wanted leaders who were approachable and always took their concerns into consideration.
"Hence, BN and Umno candidates should be persons who had been proven to work and always stayed close to them, not only appearing before the general election.
"It's no point we have many professionals as candidates but they are unable to carry out the mandate entrusted to them," he told reporters after presenting early schooling aid to 54 pupils of SJK (C) Chin Hun, Kuala Sanglang, here today.
Shahidan, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, also donated six units of LCD television to the school which was received by its headmaster, Leong Yong Siang.
He said the list of candidates that was submitted to the party president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak were based on the nominations from party wings, which comprised a combination of experienced and new faces as well as young individuals.
"As State Umno Liaison chairman, I leave it to the top leadership to make an assessment and choose candidates who are qualified," he said.
Shahidan said Perlis Umno was now in a strong position and all past disputes had been resolved and it was acting as a team. — Bernama
