PETALING JAYA: Malaysia continues to enhance the capability of its field hospital in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh by adding medical equipment to help more Rohingya refugees in the country.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry would look into the condition of the hospital to identify the shortcomings and improvements needed.
He said the report on the condition of the hospital would be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to decide whether to extend the hospital's operation or otherwise.
"I'm proud that the hospital has treated and saved over 3,500 patients' lives.
"I believe that with the support and cooperation of other countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh, the hospital's capability can be enhanced and help more Rohingya refugees."
Hishammuddin said this at a press conference after flagging off a special Malaysian delegation to the field hospital in Bangladesh at the Subang Royal Malaysian Air Force base (RMAF), here.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) chief, Gen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor who is leading the mission, said 10 tonnes of medical supplies, food and basic necessities sent to the Malaysian field hospital to further enhance its operational capability.
"Among the assets sent to Cox's Bazar is an ambulance and I hope the vehicle will be able to expedite the sending of Rohingya refugee patients to the hospital.
"My mission is to send all these medical equipment to be used at Cox's Bazar. In addition, I will also look at the situation and advise the government, if necessary, to further streamline the hospital’s operations and humanitarian assistance there,” he said.
Raja Mohamed Affandi said the MAF saw its role of protecting the people there as a core function to ensure a safe environment.
"The situation that has deeply affected the Rohingya refugees is unacceptable and we’ve responded to the prime minister's call that Malaysia should do its best to improve the lives of the refugees at Cox's Bazar," he said. — Bernama
