KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin urged youths to exercise their democratic right to vote, amidst calls to boycott the 14th General Elections.
He said it is crucial for the younger generation to actively participate in the democratic process of choosing the country's leadership.
"I think its important for you (youths) to go out there and take part in democracy and in the elections"
"You should go out there and cast your vote," Khairy told the media after officiating a TN50 Private Retirement Scheme (TN50 PRS) Youth event held at the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) office here.
Khairy was commenting on a movement called #UndiRosak, the hashtag used by campaigners to boycott the GE14.
Campaigners, especially the younger generation have used the hashtag as a platform to express unhappiness with election candidates from both sides of the political divide.
A forum on #UndiRosak was also held on Thursday where some of the speakers viewed that there is no difference between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan and they have the right to not vote or to spoil their votes.
Meanwhile, Khairy said the TN50 PRS is a platform for Malaysians aged 20 to 30 to contribute RM1,000 to any PRS fund and will get the matching RM1,000 contribution by the government this year.
He said this is the continuity of the existing PRS which was first introduced by the government in 2012.
PRS is a voluntary retirement savings scheme that compliments the mandatory contribution scheme of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
