JOHOR BARU: There was no intention to intimidate Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali over her talk at a political rally last year. According to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan, the police had merely questioned her presence there and were not meant to intimidate her.
"The police was just investigating her presence at the rally that did not have police approval, not to scare or intimidate her," he said at an event at the Sri Mohamed Rahmat Complex in Tampoi, here.
He added that Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had instructed all agencies under his ministry to use proper discretion during questioning, to avoid accusations of politicisation.
Siti Hasmah was questioned on Friday at 11am at Yayasan Al Bukhari, over her participation in Purple Walk, a gathering for women where she also gave a speech.
She told local media that she was not intimidated as she did not think she had done anything wrong.
She said the police had questioned her about her participation and speech at the rally, which was against "toxic politics".
"I didn't feel any pressure as I had done nothing wrong. They asked me who was the organiser. They asked if I was the organiser," local media reported her as saying.
Veteran politicians like Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz have since criticized the investigation of Siti Hasmah, who will be 92 this year.
Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who was present during the incident, said that the two policemen from Bukit Aman appeared to be uncomfortable during the questioning.
