KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Hotels Kuala Lumpur (MAH KL) has managed to collect RM40,000 from its Charity Cookie Bake 2017.
MAH KL chairperson Shirley Lai said this amount is the highest ever collected since the program's inception eight years ago.
"Originally pledging to at least raise RM10,000 to be donated to two beneficiaries, it was a pleasant and heartwarming surprise for the MAH KL chapter when it managed to sell all of its 2,392 packets of cookies.
"The cookies were sold to hotel members, associates and suppliers and this amount represents more than the initial donation pledge," Lai said during a check presentation ceremony held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel here.
The MAH KL Charity Cookie Bake is an annual community benefit programme held every December with the objective of financially assisting charitable organisations in the city. The charity is a unique program that involves the participation of 24 mainly Kuala Lumpur-based hotels.
With each hotel contributing at least 25kg worth of their signature cookies, the cookies are then repacked into smaller gift packs weighing 200g each. The cookies were sold for RM20 each, and RM18 each, for bulk purchases with a minimum amount of 100 packets.
The beneficiaries for this year's program are Rumah Nur Kasih Bestari and the Women and Health Association (WAKE). Each beneficiary received RM20,000.
