3 killed, 6 hurt as school bus rams into parked lorry

BINTULU: Three persons died including two family members and six students were hurt when a school bus rammed into the back of a lorry parked on the roadside at Km12, Jalan Pesisir Bintulu-Miri, this morning.
Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohamad Meramit said in the 6.12am incident, the victims were the bus driver Ramnelan Samar, his daughter Nur Nabila Syakila, 9, and another bus passenger Aien Laila Aliesha, 11, who died at Bintulu Hospital.
"Six students sustained injuries, 14 students and the driver of the lorry carrying a load of iron rods escaped unhurt," he said today.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said during the incident, the school bus was on its way to Bintulu from Samalaju and hit the rear of the lorry parked on the roadside.
According to him, initial investigations found that the cause of the accident was believed to have been due to negligence on the part of the lorry driver who had parked the lorry indiscriminately on the side of the road. — Bernama
