Public advised not to near snakes without proper knowledge

KANGAR: The public is advised not to approach or capture any kind of snake if they have no prior knowledge of how to handle the reptile, as it could be a deadly encounter.
Perlis Snake and Reptile Farm staff Azri Ahmad said the snake is a unique animal which cannot be handled solely based on courage or bravery.
"I lost half of my index finger after being bitten by a small viper, and this was after getting immediate treatment and despite having knowledge on how to deal with such a situation.
"A python, on the other hand, are considered by many people to be harmless because it is not venomous, but the python actually has the power to kill a victim through constriction, despite weighing less than 20kg," he told Bernama near here, today.
Azri, who has handled snakes for over 13 years said if one encountered a snake, he or she should stay away and immediately contact the Malaysian Defence Force (APM) or the Fire and Rescue Department.
"If you are dealing with a venomous snake and you are too close to it (less than 2 m), do not panic, instead 'stay still' until the snake passes by because it usually does not attack if it does not feel threatened.
"I would also like to remind anyone who has been bitten by a snake to make sure to go to the hospital. Whether its venomous or not, seeking treatment at the hospital is a must, do not try any self-treatment methods as your life could be at stake," added Azri. — Bernama
