PUTRAJAYA: The security forces are in a state of alertness to guard and maintain public safety during the Thaipusam celebration tomorrow, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said he had ordered the security forces to be on guard to ensure public safety tomorrow.
In a statement in conjunction with Thaipusam, Ahmad Zahid hoped the Thaipusam celebration tomorrow would be able to foster inter-racial unity in Malaysia.
He said the government would continue to be committed in developing the economic, education and the social structure of the Indian committee in the country so they would be on par with the other communities.
"Thaipusam manifests the beauty of a plural society in Malaysia whereby every religion and culture flourish and bloom without any restrictions.
"Religious freedom is assured under Article 11 of the Federal Constitution. The tradition of maintaining (own) cultures is due to the consensus of the leaders of the various races who share power under the Barisan national government," he said.
According to Ahmad Zahid, the Thaipusam celebration in Batu Caves is the biggest (in the world) and Batu Caves is synonymous with 'mini India' where hundreds of thousands of Hindus from all over the world converge.
"Batu Caves is now an international tourism icon. It has also become the source of livelihood for traders who open stalls selling food, drinks, flowers, souvenirs, clothing and accessories to enhance the excitement of the Thaipusam celebration," he said.
Thaipusam is celebrated during the month of 'Thai', namely, the 10th month in the Hindu calendar.
"I would like to wish Happy Thaipusam to the entire Hindu community in Malaysia," he added. — Bernama
