Father of one fined RM2k for obstructing police

KUALA LUMPUR: A father of one was fined RM2,000 or two months jail by the magistrate's court here today for obstructing a policeman from carrying out his duty, by speeding off for not having a driving license when he was flagged down.
Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abd Rahman meted out the penalty on Syafiq Iskandar Abd Latif, 32, after he pleaded guilty to obstructing a government servant, namely, Gerry Judin, 33, from carrying out his duty by intentionally avoiding a police check.
The unemployed man was charged with committing the offence in front of Block J13 Area A Jinjang Long House, Jinjang Utara Kuala Lumpur, Sentul here at noon, on Jan 31.
The accused was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term up to two years, or maximum fine of RM10,000, or both.
Earlier, Syafiq Iskandar, who was not represented, appealed for a light punishment on the grounds that he had a child and a wife who was seven months' pregnant.
However, deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim urged the court to impose a commensurative punishment as a lesson so that the accused would respect the police.
In the same court, a printing company employee, Mohd Azhar Md Isa, 46, pleaded not guilty to a charge of using criminal violence on a 29-year-old female executive by leaning on her back with a view to outrage her modesty.
He was charged with committing the offence in the LRT between KL Sentral LRT station and the Dang Wangi LRT station, Dang Wangi here at 7pm, Jan 26, under Section 354 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years, or with fines, or whipping, or with any two of the punishments, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna offered bail of RM6,000 in one surety while the accused was represented by counsel A. Krishnaveni asked for a low bail.
The court allowed bail of RM2,000 and fixed Mar 1 for remention of the case. — Bernama
