MACC nabs senior officials of property development company

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) nabbed a deputy general manager and project director of a property development company today for allegedly taking bribes from landscape maintenance contractors engaged by the public-listed company for its projects in Johor.
Also nabbed by the commission was a 34-year-old female personal assistant of the 44-year-old deputy general manager and four other men who had acted as proxies for the main suspects.
Sources said investigators learnt that the deputy general manager and the 55-year-old project director, both who were held by the Johor MACC between 3pm and 4pm had ensured the landscaping projects worth about RM44 million and was under their supervision is exclusively awarded to eight companies which are believed to be their cronies.
The deputy general manager had apparently ordered his subordinates to award high marks to the contractors to ease and enable them to receive their payments in full each month.
Likewise, the project director who is authorised to elect contractors, suppliers and consultants did the same as his detained colleague.
Sources said investigators were also suspicious of payments amounting to RM2.4 million that were paid into the bank accounts of the deputy general manager and his wife by the eight companies through four proxies between 2013 and 2017.
The MACC has frozen 15 bank accounts belonging to the deputy general manager and the companies to facilitate investigations.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki when contacted confirmed the arrests.
He said investigators are perusing documents seized during the operation to ascertain elements of power abuse and corruption in the case.
The seven suspects are expected to be remanded tomorrow.
