KUALA LUMPUR: The annual Save Our Rainforest Race (SORR) is back and is now open for registration.
Organised by Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Malaysia (Peka Malaysia), the race which is into its sixth year, will be held at Hutan Simpan Gading in Hulu Selangor on Mar 24.
Peka president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil said that they are expecting some 2,000 participants of all ages to be part of the annual event, as they are aiming to plant some 1,000 trees.
"Apart from having the race to start and end at the Pelangi Hill Resort Camp, there will be several checkpoints throughout the race which tests and exposse participants on the importance of rainforests.
"Similar to previous races held before this, the main objective of the race is to educate participants on the conservation and preservation of forests," she said during her opening remarks for SORR 2018.
The environmental activist added that it was her hope that the race will serve as a platform for the public, especially the younger generation, to appreciate and better understand the importance of preserving the rainforests.
"Peka Malaysia is extremely concerned about indiscriminate logging nationwide which affects the water catchment areas and loss of wildlife habitats.
"If we do not start doing something, there might not be any rainforest left for our future generations," she said.
She explained that among the benefits of forest conservation were reducing the effects of climate change, protecting the ecosystem and preserving water catchment areas for the benefit of all.
More information on the race is available on Peka Malaysia's website, www.pekamalaysia.org, or alternatively with email at sorr2018@gmail.com.
Each participating team comprises of two individuals, with a registration fee of RM160 per team.
